A Few Blooms Sunday Oct 5, 2008

Well, going to see the Amish stores was a bust, they are buying their merchandise in China the same as all the other stores. But we did visit a store that sold bulk goods, baking goods, and candy mostly that was fun. Bought a few things there. There was a General Store that had lots of Amish fabric, I bought 3 yards. It was a nice day for a drive. I came home and planted bulbs and started cleaning up for the winter.

Goldenrod

I love goldenrod, of course I like anything that attracts bees and buggies :). I can not convince my mother that it is not ragweed and I catch hell from her every time she sees it in bloom in my garden :). My mother is a full blooded Irish woman and there is no changing her mind no matter if there is proof right in front of her, so I have given up.

It is supposed to be a beautiful fall day today so we are off to visit some of the stores in Amish country, neither of us has been up that way for years. We are going to have lunch in Fairbank at a local mom and pop restaurant that we hear is good. When I get home I have about a 100 bulbs to plant and it sounds as if I best get that done today as the weather tomorrow does not sound like bulb planting weather.

Garlic Chives

Anyone else grow garlic chives? Each spring I have to keep myself from pulling it up because it looks like a weed but each fall I am rewarded with lovely white flowers that the bees and other buggies just love!

Black Swallowtail Butterfly

I'mmmmm baccccck......................................................:). It has been awhile since I have had a chance or the inspiration to blog. Since the flood consumed my whole life and every free moment, the moments that were not taken over by the repair work were eaten up by stress. But it is all done now...........finally. What a terrible summer. I'm glad fall is here, winter is even not looking too bad :).

The last two summers I have planted an herb bed with fennel to attract black swallowtail butterflies, it worked! This year I brought one inside to watch it spin it's cocoon and hopefully turn into a butterfly. I am thrilled to say that is was a success and fun to watch, we released the butterfly into the same herb bed, it merrily flew away. I am going to do the same thing next year, my daughter in law who teaches kindergarten wants one for her classroom.

I noticed the dashboard for blogging looks all different so I am off to check that out and see what this follow thing is all about..........

A Day Lily Kind of Sunday

Whiter Shade of Pale

We are getting a new patio poured this coming week, I have a large flower bed beside it that I dug all the flowers out of to save them from the whatever machine they use to break up the old concrete, mostly lilies, day lilies and Asiatic lilies. I am sure the day lilies will survive but I am not sure about the other lilies. I also dug a bunch of peonies, I am not sure if they will survive being moved this time of year. Also 3 clematis vines, not sure if they will make it either but what do I have to lose by trying? And a peony tree that has not bloomed for a couple of years, probably because the flower bed that was sunny is now shady due to my linden tree getting much larger. With everything going on this year due to the flooding I doubt I will do anything with it except maybe plants some bulbs this fall, over the winter I will be planning a shade garden which will be fun. I plan on using lots of the new coral bells with the beautiful foliage varieties you can find now days.
