Rhythm of the Rain and Prickly Pear Cactus

Well, the rain has finally stopped but it is a clammy damp day, the kind of day that brings out all the bugs, we got chewed up by mosquitoes this AM walking the dogs, I found 3 ticks on one of the dogs, which grossed me out and sent us running to the vet for Frontline. Not a good day to be working outside but I am heading out to fertilize my roses and annuals. I have lots of Iris that need to be dug but not sure if that will happen today or not.

I took these photos of the prickly pear cactus last week.

I like the flowers on your prickly pear cactus. Mine have a bit more red in the center, but I like yours better. Isn't it fun to surprise people with cactus growing in places like Iowa and Indiana. It's not all corn around these parts, right?!

Carol, I posted in your blog that your cactus had red and mine did not, but after mine opened I see they DO have red, that shows you how good my memory is or isn't in this case...lol...

Deemon, I found 4 on me, the nasty little critters, none had attached them self yet, I have been telling Erin all day that she is my little wood ticky dog :). She doesn't seem to mind, before I put the Frontline on her I gave her a good bath and checked her over.

I want to grow a prickly pear but I'm scared about getting stuck or the nephew getting stuck with the spines.

I lived in Arizona for a year and would hated taking the dog out for a walk because when we got home he'd have his nose covered in them. Whoever says dogs are smarter than cats has never walked one through a patch of prickly pears.
