A Late Veteran's Day Post

As I have mentioned in a few posts my Dad has been diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure and has been in and out of the hospital for almost 2 mos now. He is a WWII vet, he enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17, at the time he had never been more than 25 miles away from his home in North Washington, IA, they were put on a bus and taken to Des Moines and from there to California for boot camp and then to the Pacific Theater, he spent 4 years away from Iowa, he was on the first ship that went into Japan after the Japanese surrendered. He earned a purple heart and other medals, he gave all of these to my son last year along with his Navy uniforms. My daughter in law had a shadow box put together, it is a great display. My grandson took it to school along with the uniforms on Veterans Day, the teacher invited some WWII vets to the classroom. These are a couple of the photos, makes me proud of my Dad and of my grandson.

What a great idea to create a shadow box with your father's war memorabilia ... your grandson looks so proud and adorable!

It's a great thing to be proud of your dad ... he was there at the right time to be part of a great time in American history. And a great idea to make a shadow box of his things medals!!

You have a right to be proud of your father. He earned it of everyone. Your grandson seems to favor your him.

I hope you enjoyed your time together, especially now that he is home. It is hard to see someone you love in a compromised state. I've been thinking of you.

Very nice post and I agree with Kate that the shadow box idea is great. It's good to keep that kind of history out in the open where the family and visitors can see it and remember.

Thanks for the post and I hope your father is doing good.

What a really neat way to gather those precious memorabilia. I am sure your grandson had a great presentation at school. I can only imagine it must be a difficult time for you to see your father not doing well. Best regards, Andrea
