This photo was taken last November, we had a hard frost, I had pulled up all the dead plants, and this little fennel plant started growing, it is such a brilliant green against the dry leaves. I plant fennel to attract Black Swallowtail butterflies, I had caterpillars two years in a row but did not have any this past summer, keeping my fingers crossed for next summer.

I was so glad to see your post. I planted fennel this year for the butterflies and was given a bronze fennel. Both had caterpillars! Will they come up next year or will I have to replant?
The contrast is beautiful
Hi Gail and Beckie, fennel re-seeds itself for me sometimes, I'm in zone 4, but I plant new each year to make sure I have plenty, glad you had catapillars, they are so much fun to watch. I hope they return for me this year.
I had several fennel plants across the street, and only saw one caterpillar one time. It either got eaten or turned into a chrysalis where I couldn't find it the next day. I hope to get more this year.
I like your little fennel that could plant. I notice a little henbit, or whatever that is under it. I get those, too.
Hopefully the butterflies will be back.
