Camera Critter Saturday-Black Swallowtail Caterpillars

Posted by Picasa

I took these a few weeks back hoping to have a photo of the butterfly to go with them, but no such luck, I must have been at work or another place when they came out of their cocoons :(.  I only saw one Black Swallowtail butterfly in my yard this year and by the time I got my camera she was gone.  They are probably my favorite butterfly as they were one of the 1st ones I was able to lure into my yard years ago with fennel.

Beautiful caterpillar, I have never had the chance to see one in person or the butterfly they become.

They are so beautiful, what a pity that you couldn't see the butterflies too.

I stalk them out on the prairie, I too plant food for them. They move their wings a lot when eating so have to shoot a lot. I have never done the fennel, but see it being used on a favorite cooking show a lot.I use the seed.

Nice shot. I had a parsley plant that one day disappeared. On the bare branches were about 8 of those caterpillers.
As I researched how to over winter them, something had caterpiller dinner and all were gone.
Wish I had gotten a picture like you did.
