Hens and Chicks And Strange Buds

Hens and Chicks are one of my favorite plant families, this one is just too cute.

The photo of the buds is on a plant that I have had in my garden for several years, I have never noticed how strange they were, or if this year they are doing something weird. These are delphinium buds, is this how they are supposed to look and I have never noticed it before?

I wonder if you have an infestation of some kind of web producing pest. Doesn't seem to be harming your hen-and-chicks though.

Our Delphiniums don't look like that. Are you sure it isn't some kind of weed?

My hens and chicks are sad. They have ants eating at their roots and my youngest likes to walk on them barefoot. They started to send up blossom heads and my daughter picked them all. :(

I like yours they are compact and cute...

Your Hen and Chickens look just fine. There are scores of different kinds and yours is supposed to look as if there are webs on them. It's called sempervivium "Ciliosum Borisii". They should be in a very dry, well draining area.

And the other buds aren't Delphiniums for sure. Post the picture when they bloom and I'm sure they'll be able to be identified.

Those sure don't look like delph buds to me either, in fact are you sure it's even a delph? Couldn't see the leaves close enough to make a positive ID on them. But sometimes plants just mutant on ya, lol. I've got Calendulas sporting into versions with "satellite" blooms circling the central flower... very strange mutation that showed up last year. In an IA garden, anything's possible, eh? :-)
